South Carolina Aquarium will hold a second Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest on Friday, October 28 at 11 am. The experience is included with Aquarium admission.
During the first competition held on October 21, six divers carved sea-inspired designs into pumpkins while submerged in the deepest tank in North America, the Aquarium’s Great Ocean Tank. The tank is 42-feet deep and filled with hundreds of fish of varying species, including sharks. It took the divers approximately 20 minutes to carve the pumpkins before guests at the Aquarium voted for their favorite design by applause. A carving of an octopus won top honors.
“Underwater carving serves as a form of enrichment for the animals that live in the Great Ocean Tank,” notes a release by South Carolina Aquarium. “The activity offers a form of stimulation and introduces new, fun objects into their environment.”
Tickets can be purchased from the aquarium’s website or at the South Carolina Aquarium ticket window. For more information call (843) 577-FISH (3474) or visit scaquarium.org.
