About two years after Charleston Hardware closed its doors on Wappoo Road, West Ashley True Value opened right across the street.  The 8300 square foot retailer held its grand opening a week ago at the Ashley Oaks Shopping Center at the intersection of Ashley River Road and Wappoo.  The grand opening drew an estimated 1000 customers.

Owner and manager Waylon Cain noted that the grand opening was promoted by delivering flyers door-to-door and by word of mouth from neighbor to neighbor.  The Cain family has owned a True Value store on Edisto Island since 2005.  West Ashley True value currently has eight employees with plans to expand its workforce.

“The store has been much busier than anyone expected,” Cain said.

In addition to standard hardware supplies, the store offers lawn and garden products, holiday decorations, pet and wild bird supplies, a key-copying service, and rental equipment, such as carpet cleaning machines.  Employees were walking the aisles wearing buttons reading, “Ask Me For Help.”  Customer service is a feature often lacking at the corporate Big Box stores.

Cain plans to offer Do It Yourself workshops after hours starting in January.

“There is a lot of interest in the community for home improvement, and we plan to give people the help they need to do it,” he said.
