West Ashley High School’s Naval Junior ROTC (NJROTC) air rifle team recently won a regional qualifying competition at Summerville High School.  The squad will compete for the state championship January 20 and 21 at White Knoll High School in Lexington County.  The competitors shoot at paper targets from a range of 33 feet from standing, kneeling and prone positions.

Faculty NJROTC instructor Master Gunnery Sergeant Frederick Gaston believes the competitions teach the student-cadets important life lessons.  “It gives them the confidence to become better students, citizens and productive members of society,” Gaston said.  The squad is made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores.

The 12 members of the air rifle team include captain Damon Tedder, co-captain Coleman Walker, Malachi Mack, Kelli Nguyen, Caitlin Cattles, Jaliyah Foulkes, Alta Fraley, Langston Nichols, Avory Nelson, William Skinner, Nicholas Herzer and Khadija Davis.
