West Ashley High Schools fielded robotics teams which recently won regional competitions at Palmetto Scholars Academy in North Charleston and Lady’s Island Middle School in Beaufort County. The competitions were sanctioned by the Robotic Education and Competition Foundation.

The school entered four terms at each competition. One of the teams won the Excellence Award, which factors in robot design, skills challenges, personal interviews and the submission of an engineering journal. The judges also take into account a team’s willingness to assist other teams.

Faculty advisor Nick Holmes and his students have helped Lang Middle School in Mt. Pleasant and West Ashley Advanced Studies Magnet, another middle school, establish robotics teams this year. Holmes is excited about working with the current 8th grade students at the high school level next year.
