West Ashley High School recently hosted the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band for the second time. The five member band plays a variety of music, ranging from classical to reggae. Principal Lee Runyon invited the band as part of the school’s annual First Quarter Celebration.

Band spokesman Technical Sergeant Mike Henrie notes that the school concert performances help demonstrate the professionalism and versatility of the Air Force. He said students are encouraged to sing along to the songs they know and take pictures. “Hopefully, we inspired the students to greatness. And hopefully, they will see that the Air Force is much more than airplanes,” Henrie said.

The Heritage of America Band plays concerts at schools, overseas installations and Veterans Administration hospitals. In addition to providing entertainment, military touring bands serve as a recruiting tool. West Ashley High School has a large Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) unit, and many of its graduates go on to serve in the military.
