Coach Samuel Meade, Joye Ridgeway & Linda Bowden
The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) named West Ashley High School teacher Samuel Meade the Outstanding Teacher of American History for the area. Chapter member and West Ashley resident Joye Ridgeway recognized Meade at a school faculty meeting. He will be competing for the national DAR award.
Meade was a scholarship basketball player at the College of Charleston. After coaching college basketball for six seasons, he has coached basketball and taught history in the Charleston area for more than three decades. He has taught at West Ashley since it opened in 2000.
Ridgeway said that Meade was selected because of his strong connections with former students, parents and faculty colleagues. Many former students nominated him on the Fort Sullivan DAR Facebook page because of the impact he had on their lives as a teacher and outside of the classroom.
Meade believes that teachers should be role models and guide students to become productive citizens. His teaching style promotes class discussion and engaging students students with the impact historical events have on their lives today. He believes that high school should prepare students for college, the military or the workforce after graduation.
