Principal Lee Runyon at West Ashley High School is being reassigned to another job within Charleston County School District at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. He is completing his third year as principal of the school. A school board member told Lowcountry Source that Superintendent Gerrita Postlewait commented in a behind closed doors executive session at the Apr. 24 school board meeting that Runyon was being reassigned without specifying the reason or showing documentation. He is one on 13 principals being reassigned following this school year.

Recently the Charleston County School Board absolved themselves of the authority to vote on principal assignments and ceded it to the superintendent. Supporters of Principal Runyon are circulating a petition on Change.org. You can see the petition by West Ashley Parent Action Committee at https://www.change.org/p/ccsd-superintendent-and-board-of-trustees-mr-runyon-stay-at-west-ashley-high-school-as-principal

The wording on the petition is as follows: West Ashley community we need your support to make sure Mr. Runyon remains the principal at West Ashley High School. He cares for the children of West Ashley and has created a great trust and excellent communication with the students, parents and teachers. He has moved the school towards a brighter future and has a plan for continued success. Please sign the petition and add a note as to why he needs to stay at WAHS.

The Charleston County School District released a statement indicating that the school board unanimously approved the Superintendent’s recommendation for school administrator (principal or assistant principal) contract renewals or re-assignments.  Our source indicates that the board was not given the identities of the 13 school administrators being re-assigned or the reasons for the re-assignments.
