Charleston County voters approved a $108 Million referendum in 2014 to build five new libraries and renovate 13 existing libraries by a 3-to-1 margin. Two years later, the projects have not been bonded by Charleston County Council, including the proposed library near the West Ashley High School campus.
Other new library projects were approved for James Island, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Hollywood. The renovation projects will follow the new construction and will include more computer terminals and study rooms for teens.
In the two years since the library referendum was approved, the only funding for the projects has gone to site selection and preparation and hiring a project manager.
