The Drug Enforcement Administration is sponsoring a national collection day for expired or unused prescription medications Saturday, October 22 from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be 14 collection stations in the lowcountry.

Of particular concern are prescription painkillers, which can cause addiction if used when no longer needed. People who become addicted to painkillers often turn to illegal heroine use. Codeine-based prescription cough medicines can have the same effect. Flushing the medications down the drain can contaminate the water supply.

The Charleston Police Department will collect the unused prescription medicines in the Sears parking lot at the Citadel Mall. Costco members may drop off their unused medicines at the store on 3050 Ashley Towne Center Drive in West Ashley. Other collection stations can be located at www.DEA.gov.
