The West Ashley Revitalization Commission (WARC) began its subcommittee process Monday with the initial meeting of the communications subcommittee at Bees Landing Recreation Center. WARC Chairman Peter Shahid had subcommittee members Maria Aselage (Chairwoman), Theresa Tidestrom, St. Andrews Public Service District Commissioner John DeStefano and Donna Jacobs introduce themselves. Subcommittee member Sue Stevens was not present.
Shahid emphasized that all subcommittee meetings will have agendas and minutes posted on the web page http://Charleston-SC.gov/WARC. The subcommittee meetings will all include public comment periods. Jacobs, one of the 19 WARC Commissioners, noted that the communications subcommittee will provide a template for other subcommittees yet to be formed.
The subcommittee’s first task is to come up with a mission statement. Several members discussed the need for an open and two-way dialogue with members of the community. Most of the community members in attendance live in the Shadowmoss subdivision, which has been plagued by flooding problems in recent years. There was discussion about a WARC Facebook page, a community survey and scheduling meetings at times more conducive to citizen involvement.
Shahid encouraged people to attend the WARC meeting Wed. at 5 pm to be held at the Town & Country Inn, 2008 Savannah Hwy. Victor Kohl from consultant group Dover, Kohl and Partners will present an overview of the West Ashley Master Plan process.
