Outgoing Charleston County Councilwoman Colleen Condon says the first project she pursued upon taking office in 2005 was upgrading the intersection of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Ashley River Road, which she characterizes as one of the busiest and most dangerous intersections in the county.  Ground was broken for the $7.5 Million project Tuesday morning at the St. Andrews Public Service District fire station on Ashley River Road.

The project will add a left turn lane coming off of both highways and will extend the inbound right turn lane on Ashley River Road at Westwood Plaza shopping center.  Transit times in all directions will be increased, with the City of Charleston adjusting light timing upon completion.  The goal of the project is less traffic congestion and fewer accidents.  Charleston County Council Chairman Elliott Summey notes that area businesses were major participants in the planning process.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg noted that the project is the first of many intersection upgrades slated for West Ashley’s major thoroughfares and an important step in the West Ashley revitalization process.  He cited several other projects to be funded by the recently passed 0.5% transportation sales tax increase, including an overpass at the Main Road and Savannah Highway intersection and the widening of Glenn McConnell Parkway.
