Clemson’s football team began its quest to return to the college football championship game with a 19-13 win at Auburn in front of 87,000 fans. Panthers all-pro quarterback Cam Newton, an Auburn alum, was on the sidelines, wearing a Bo Jackson #34 jersey. It was Auburn’s sixth straight home loss to an opponent from a major conference.

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, a 2015 Heisman Trophy finalist, did not put up spectacular numbers. He passed for 248 yards, with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow, and ran for 21 yards. His favorite target was receiver Mike Williams, who caught nine passes for 174 yards. Williams missed most of the 2015 season with a neck injury.

Running back Wayne Gallman was a workhorse for Clemson, rushing 30 times for 123 yards. His 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter came in a formation which included defensive linemen Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence as extra blockers.

Auburn used three different quarterbacks and had many negative yardage plays against Clemson’s stifling defense.

Clemson plays its home opener Saturday against Sunbelt Conference opponent Troy (Alabama) at 12:30.
