Charleston County Council’s Finance Committee was expected to consider a funding plan for the bicycle lane across the Ashley River requested by Charleston City Council. The committee unanimously approved a motion to defer the matter to the September 1 finance meeting.

The measure to go forward with the plan to close a lane of vehicular traffic going from West Ashley to downtown was passed by Charleston City Council by a controversial 7-6 vote on July 26. Councilman Rodney Williams’ affirmative vote was allowed despite the absence of telephone voting being authorized in the City Council’s Rules and Procedures ordinance. Councilman Bill Moody has requested a ruling on the vote from the Attorney General’s office.

The funding for the bicycle lane project is projected to come from the county transportation sales tax approved by voters in 2004. Charleston County Council must approve the transaction.
