A new stage adaptation of Love Jones The Musical will play Thursday, October 13 at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. The stage production boasts an impressive cast of R&B stars that includes Chrisette Michelle, Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem Devaughn, Dave Hollister and Hip Hop legend, MC Lyte, who will serve as the host.

Based on the award winning dramatic film written and directed by Theodore Witcher and nominated for seven Film Festival Awards, including Outstanding Motion Picture, Love Jones first released in January of 1997 at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Black Film Award for Best Soundtrack. It is the contemporary romantic love story of a professional photographer named Nina and Darius, a poetic novelist set in the world of Chicago’s middle class black artists and professionals.

The film’s original writer and director, Theodore Witcher, serves as consulting producer and the musical is produced by veteran theater producer Melvin Childs of Produced By Faith, with stage play written by Timothy Allen Smith, and directed by Zadia Ife.

“We are really excited about this opportunity to break new ground with this musical, as it relates to African American offerings in theater around the country,” Childs said in the press release. “Our team has created something truly special and sincerely hope to live up to the expectations of the fans of the iconic film, Love Jones.”
