The first weekend in August is the time parents and children shop for back to school items with the following items being exempt from Charleston County’s 8.5% sales tax:

• Clothing
• Clothing accessories: hats, scarves, hosiery, and handbags
• Footwear
• School supplies: pens, pencils, paper, binders, notebooks, bookbags, lunchboxes, and calculators
• Computers, printers, print supplies, and computer software
• Bed and Bath Linens: bath wash cloths, blankets, bed linens, sheet sets, comforter sets, bath towels, shower curtains, bath rugs and mats pillows, and pillow cases

This is a general list. To get a more detailed list refer to the South Carolina Department of Revenue website[1].

According to Parenting Magazine, parents spend $179 per child on back to school items with $131 on clothing and $48 on school supplies.
