West Ashley High School sophomore Kelsey Carroll recently won the target shooting competition at National Youth Hunt in Omaha, Georgia. She was the only female among the 10 contestants selected by the Quality Deer Management Association, which promotes maintaining healthy deer populations and wildlife habitat.

Carroll was nominated to participate by her Outdoor Pursuits class teacher Thomas Cousins. She appreciated the opportunity, stating, “Coach Cousins makes learning serious but fun. He teaches us an appreciation for the outdoors.”

During the hunt portion of the competition, the 10 hunters, aged 13-16, were given a guide to accompany them at three different sites. Carroll was among the nine hunters who bagged a deer. She is considering a career in wildlife management.
