West Ashley High School Senior Makenzie Watkins was selected as the school’s High School Heisman winner, sponsored by Wendy’s. The award was established by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, who wanted to recognize high school seniors for academic and athletic accomplishments, leadership and community service.
Watkins was the soccer team captain for four years. She ranks in the Top 10 in her senior class, participates in the Spanish Club, and serves as a student ambassador to promote West Ashley High School at area middle schools.
West Ashley Principal Lee Runyon praised Watkins, stating, “She is known by her teachers and friends for her commitment to excellence. We are excited that a program like Wendy’s High School Heisman is recognizing her hard work.”
Watkins will receive a college scholarship as part of the award. She credits her mother and soccer coach Drew McNeely for encouraging her to work hard and do her best.
