West Ashley students win culinary awards

West Ashley High School seniors Michelle Hammock (front) and Abigail Delgado (rear) placed first and fifth, respectively, at the Limehouse Produce 2016 Fall Cornucopia Cook-Off at Trident Technical College. Hammock presented a “Autumn Harvest” desert recipe, while Delgado prepared a “Fall Produce Pizza”. The dishes were prepared in front of a panel of judges.

Culinary Arts instructor Chef Jason Wheless praised Hammock for her hard work and research. Hammock received a $125 check from the group Teach the Need and will get a being the scenes tour of downtown Charleston restaurants which includes dinner at the Charleston Grill. Hammock will also be featured in a Local Palate magazine advertisement.

The West Ashley culinary arts team is defending its state championship in the ProStart Culinary Competition. Chef Wheless notes that the school is always looking for competitions and that he seeks to help his students secure culinary arts scholarships.
