Five West Ashley High School student-athletes signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college in front a school-wide assembly Wednesday as part of National Signing Day. Principal Lee Runyon told the assembled students, “This is the culmination of four years of hard work and dedication.” Runyon also credited the students’ families and the school faculty and coaching staff with contributing to the students’ success.

Three of the signees are football players. All-Lowcountry defensive end Jay Smith signed with The Citadel, quarterback Jordan Hollinshead is headed to South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, and cornerback Myles White will continue his career at Allen University. Softball player Ashley Jones is headed to Queens University in Charlotte, while baseball catcher Michael Poulos will stay close to home at College of Charleston.

Runyon notes that many of the signees overcame obstacles in life, including three who lost their mothers. He said the school community stood with them and provided the support and encouragement they needed to excel. He said, “These student-athletes worked extremely hard and have great character.”
