The cheerleaders from Academic Magnet High School have been invited to perform in the pregame ceremony at the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl January 1, 2019 in Orlando. The squad was selected by the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), based on a superlative performance during its annual summer camp at Clemson University. The Citrus Bowl features a Southeastern Conference team versus a Big 10 team. The girls are also performing at Disney World.

The Academic Magnet squad won a number of first place awards at the Clemson competition. Audrey Alexander, Jessica Forney, and Rosie Booker were all designated by UCA as All-American cheerleaders. Alexander and Sarah Romagnuolo were among only 20 cheerleaders nationwide who were selected as UCA safety instructors. They will travel to camps across the country during the summer of 2019 to train high school cheerleaders in safety procedures and participate in other events while they attend college.

The squad is embarking on a series of fund-raising efforts to finance its five-day trip to Orlando. It will conduct a bake sale this Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 am at Charleston Cars & Coffee at Towne Center in Mt. Pleasant and return there on October 6 and October 20. Donations are already being accepted on a special GoFundMe page.

Cheerleading coach Page Horschel said, “This experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our girls. Many will never have the opportunity to cheer at the collegiate level, so this is a way to see what that feels like.” All of the girls on the squad have grade averages of 4.0 or above and are taking a course load of honors and Advanced Placement classes. Academic Magnet is the top-ranked high school in South Carolina. The school includes students from throughout Charleston County.
