Charleston City Councilman Peter Shahid announced that a public meeting is scheduled for May 17 to discuss the future of the Sycamore Shopping Center at St. Andrews Boulevard and Sycamore Avenue. The property is zoned for mixed-use development. It will likely include ground-level retail stores with apartments located above. CVS and the strip of retail stores that includes Jersey Mike’s sandwich shop will remain at the shopping center. Rogue Motion boat lot and Victory Motor Sales will not be permanent tenants.

Shahid made the announcement Saturday at his monthly Coffee and Conversation with Peter at Charles Towne Landing. Shahid also announced that the West Ashley Revitalization Commission will get an update on the Wappoo Drainage Study May 8 and that Charleston County transportation officials will conduct a meeting on the updated plans for the SC 7 and SC 171 Intersection Project during the month of May. The possibility of a roundabout on Orange Grove Road has been taken off the table.

Mayoral candidate Mike Seekings attended the meeting, stating that he wanted to find out the concerns West Ashley residents have. He expressed his commitment to improving periodic drainage maintenance and noted that a GIS mapping survey with elevations will soon be conducted to enable Charleston to better plan drainage infrastructure needs. Seekings also said he is receptive to a litter prevention public awareness campaign.
