Applications are now being accepted for the Charleston County School Board seat that will be vacated by Michael Miller in January. Miller was recently elected Charleston County Register of Deeds and will take office in January. The seat is in the area which extends from Seabrook Island to Edisto Island and includes all of West Ashley.

Applicants must be registered voters and meet the residency requirement. They will have to go through a State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) background check. Applications may be picked at the Charleston County Legislative Delegation office at North Charleston City Hall, 2500 City Hall Lane. For questions about the application process, call 843-740-5855. The closing date for the application period has not been set.

The Charleston County Legislative Delegation consists of every State Representative and State Senator whose district includes any Charleston County voters. Voting for the school board seat is weighted based on how many Charleston County residents are in the legislators’ districts. The delegation will likely meet in January and vote to recommend a candidate to fill the remaining two years of Miller’s term. The recommended candidate will have to be approved by the General Assembly and then be appointed by Governor Henry McMaster.
