First Congressional District candidate Katie Arrington received an endorsement from some Charleston-area black business leaders Wednesday at a press conference in West Ashley. Entrepreneur Jerome Heyward said, “Today is a new day in Charleston. Some life-long Democrats have decided to support the best candidate – (Republican) Katie Arrington.” He added, “Democrats have taken us for granted for too long. Nobody is going to tell us what to think or who to vote for.”

Arrington, who defeated incumbent Mark Sanford in the June Republican primary, was grateful to have the show of support from Heyward, Calvin Whitfield, Joey Jefferson, Calvin Rainey, and others. She said, “I am humbled and honored to have these business leaders standing by me. They are putting their businesses, their families and their reputation on the line.” Arrington said the district needs a Representative who wants all students to have the opportunity for a good education and a bright future.

Opposed by Democrat Joe Cunningham in the November 6 election, Arrington referred to her days as an Army wife with a young special needs child who once needed to go on food stamps and worked the late-night shift at a restaurant to make ends meet.  She said, “Joe Cunningham is a one-issue candidate who does not know what it is like to live paycheck-to-paycheck.” She has a new ad out stating that Cunningham would support the agenda of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who supports tax increases and impeaching President Donald Trump.
