Charleston County Public Library spokeswoman Natalie Hauff gave the James Island West Ashley James Island Business Association (WAJIBA) an update on the libraries funded by the $108.5 million referendum approved by 74% of the Charleston County voters in 2014. The 20,000 square foot Bees Ferry West Ashley Library is under construction and should be completed in about a year. It will be located near the West Ashley High School campus.

The Bees Ferry West Ashley Library will include a 100-seat auditorium, two teen study rooms, a children’s story area, a computer learning lab, 51 computer terminals for patrons, two landscaped outdoor patios, and a hobby space with technology and equipment for home projects. One of the design features for the $9.8 million structure is a 26-foot high tinted glass window that will overlook a wetlands area. Hauff added that when the five new construction libraries are completed, renovations will begin at Cynthia Hurd Library near Village Square and the South Windermere library.

Hauff gave WAJIBA members a briefing on the business services offered on the website. Any library card holder has access to demographic and consumer data by zip code, market research, video skill-building courses, and mentoring, among other services. She also informed the group about new library policies, including the addition of self-checkout at Hurd Library and the discontinuation of late-return fines for books. She announced the the summer reading program will kick off on June 8 and will include incentive awards[1] for the first time.
