Brukes Coffee and Music is hosting a blood drive Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. Greenville-based blood center The Blood Connection will have a mobile unit at the shop, located at 1664 Old Towne Road in West Ashley. Donors will receive $20 VISA gift cards.

Brukes opened at the Old Towne Center location in November 2019. It has a unique business model, combining a coffee shop with a string instrument store. Guitars, violins, ukeleles, mandolins, and other string instruments line the walls. Patrons may test out the instruments in a back room. On Friday, owner Chris Bluemel, who also operates Southern String Supply in Mt. Pleasant, was offering professional development training for CCSD music teachers.

One of Bluemel’s aims is bringing the arts to the West Ashley community. The shop has hosted swing dancing and ukulele lessons and intends to offer live music performances and poetry readings. It offers a variety of coffees, teas, breakfast and brunch foods. The family-friendly locale will soon include a 15 x 45 foot dog kennel.
