School board candidate Jake Rambo revealed earlier this week that the Charleston County School District (CCSD) spent $65,000 for an image consultant. Lowcountry Source recently learned that CCSD has payed nearly $188,000 to consultant Beth Havens since August 2016. Havens “floats” through various departments to work on special tasks assigned by Superintendent Gerrita Postlewait.

When it comes to reporting consulting fees and other financial matters, school board members depend on the CCSD Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Current CFO Don Kennedy was hired to fill the position in April after it had been vacant for nearly 10 months, even though he was not among the five candidates who applied for the job. Kennedy was dismissed from the Seattle school district[1] along former CCSD Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson in 2011 for questionable contracting decisions, according to the Seattle Times.

There will be four school board seats on the November ballot in Charleston County, including Mack’s. Rambo and several other candidates have made financial transparency and accountability their top issue.
