The Charleston County School District (CCSD), in partnership with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, was recently awarded a $435,000 federal grant for school safety upgrades. The grant will include measures to harden access to the front doors of all schools and assess the threats to school safety. It will also provide training to school staff, students and local law enforcement personnel on how to prevent school violence. CCSD has integrated its data with the Charleston County Alastar¬†situational awareness tool, which provides alerts, streaming video and navigational information to local law enforcement assets.

The Charleston County 911 dispatch service, the Safe Schools Project, and municipal police departments all expressed support for the initiative. CCSD Director of Security and Emergency Management Michael Reidenbach issued the following statement on the grant: “CCSD is truly thankful for the positive partnership that exists between the district and our law enforcement partners.” Reidenbach praised Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon and his staff for helping to secure the federal grant. Funding for the grant will remain until September 30, 2020.
