Charleston County School District has four School Choice Fairs scheduled for Saturday, February 1 from 10 am to 1 pm. The sites are at C.E, Williams Middle School in West Ashley (640 Butte Street). Laing Middle School in Mt. Pleasant (2705 Bulrush Basket Lane), Military Magnet Academy in North Charleston (2950 Carner Avenue), and St. Johns High School on Johns Island (1518 Main Road). The School Choice application period for the 2020-2021 school year opened Tuesday and will close February 28.
Parents will be able to meet representatives from constituent district magnet schools, countywide magnet schools, Montessori schools, and charter schools within CCSD. There are statewide charter schools in Charleston County that have separate application processes. Families will be notified of acceptance on April 3.
No applications for kindergarten for countywide magnet school Buist Academy will be taken this year. Buist is also adding a class in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades and has added criteria prioritizing admission for students from high poverty elementary schools. Academic Magnet High School has adopted admission criteria prioritizing students attending high poverty middle schools. Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School now has a priority attendance zone for its 96 kindergarten spots, which includes Orleans Woods subdivision and Orleans Garden Apartments near Citadel Mall. The school has already received about 300 applications for the 2020-2021 kindergarten class.
