St. Andrews Parks and Playground is presenting a proposal Tuesday to convert the former Church Creek Plaza shopping center into a park. The presentation starts at 7 pm at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, 1900 Parsonage Road. Parking is limited.

The shopping center along Ashley River Road was once anchored by a Piggly Wiggly grocery. When Piggly Wiggly left more than a decade ago, the shopping center was mostly vacant and the site of more than 50 criminal arrests. The buildings were demolished in 2015, and the acres of concrete have been an eyesore ever since. It is visible to tens of thousands of tourists who visit the Ashley River Historic District each year.

The park project could improve drainage along the flood prone Church Creek drainage basin. Busting up the concrete and planting absorbent plants would reduce stormwater runoff into the creek. Thousands of properties have sustained some level of flooding in the basin since 2015. The project would be funded through the Greenbelt Program, which receives $200 million from the 1% Charleston County transportation sales tax.
