Like Republicans all over the Lowcountry, the 150 active members of The Citadel Republican Society are determined to take back South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. In 2018, Joe Cunningham became the first Democrat to win that district in 40 years. Cunningham has a voting record that closely matches Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. President Trump carried the coastal district by 13 points in 2016.

Citadel Republican Society Vice President Austin Burgess says his club will do whatever is necessary to win the district in 2020, including going door-to-door, hosting fundraisers and attending rallies. “We’re going all out to take back the 1st District,” Burgess said.

The club is holding an oyster roast fundraiser Saturday, November 2 at 7 pm at the Rusty Rudder in Mount Pleasant. Tickets are available on-line. In addition to oysters, the event will offer a pork and chicken dish, side dishes, an open bar, and musical entertainment. The event is hosted by Baker Motors owner Tommy Baker. Among the co-sponsors is 1st Congressional District candidate Nancy Mace, who was the first female graduate of The Citadel. The club has invited all Republican candidates to attend its weekly meetings, held Tuesdays at 6 pm at Grimsley Hall.
