Climate change agenda is all about tax increases

The left-leaning political action committee 314 Action has pledged to funnel a lot of money into the re-election campaign for Representative Joe Cunningham. The group spent more than $500,000 to highlight the offshore drilling issue in 2018, when Cunningham became the first Democrat to win in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in 40 years. This time around, the climate change agenda seems to be the group’s featured issue.

The climate change agenda operates on the unquantifiable theory that restricting human carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions would lower global temperatures. CO2 only makes up 0.04% of the atmosphere, and human activity accounts for only about 3% of that tiny concentration. In European countries that embrace the climate change agenda[1], tax increases are routinely imposed on motor fuels and electricity to discourage consumption. In the United Kingdom, there is a tax of more than $3 per gallon for gasoline or diesel fuel, resulting in many residents who can’t afford to drive. Cunningham has said, “We need to get people out of their cars.”

The world’s climate has changed many times in human history. Humans have lived through an ice age and several warming periods. From about 900 to 1300 A.D., the Vikings farmed in Greenland before advancing glaciers forced them to leave. The succeeding “Little Ice Age” lasted until about 1850. There has been mild warming since the 1880s, long before the use of coal-fired electric power plants or SUVs. Satellite data[2] shows flat global temperatures since 1998, with a slight decline registering between 2016 and 2018. There is no evidence that the current warming period is causing any harm or that increasing taxes on motor fuels and electricity would lower the temperatures.

The air quality in America has never been better. Remember the smog in the 1970s and 1980s? It is no longer experienced in the Lowcountry. In fact, EPA records[3] show that levels of the six harmful air pollutants – particulates, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, lead, and carbon monoxide, are down an average of 73% since 1970.

I expect the Republican challengers to fight back against the climate change agenda. Do you want to pay more than $5 per gallon for gasoline and have skyrocketing electrical costs? Conditions like that would crush our standard of living and quality of life without having any tangible benefit for our environment.
