Charleston City Councilman Harry Griffin organized a community forum to discuss recent criminal activity in West Ashley. The meeting begins at 6 pm tonight at West Ashley High School, 4060 Wildcat Boulevard. Among the recent crimes of concern were the pre-dawn break-in of six homes in the Shadowmoss Plantation subdivision on July 12 and a double homicide involving minors at Ashley Oaks apartments, 78 Ashley Hall Road.

A 13-year-old has been arrested in conjunction with the break-ins, with other suspects remaining at large. 17-year-old Johns Island resident Zamere Brown has been arrested in the murder investigation. A stolen weapon is believed to have been used in the crimes. ABC News 4 has reported that 380 police service calls have been sent out from the apartment complex in 2018. It is not clear whether gang activity or drug trade is at issue there.

Charleston Police Department’s Team 4, which patrols all parts of West Ashley within the city limits, issues a weekly crime report. The leading crime categories nearly every week are narcotics violations and theft from motor vehicles. Team 4 officers have been advising West Ashley residents for years to lock their cars. Roving thieves go through neighborhoods after midnight and attempt to open car doors. They sometimes steal weapons and valuables from the unlocked cars.
