Representative Joe Cunningham voted to block a censure resolution (H Res 832) criticizing Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her behavior during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address last week. Pelosi was making faces during the speech and ripped up her copy at its conclusion. The resolution was tabled 224-193 on a party-line vote Thursday.

In 2018, Cunningham became the first Democrat to win South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in 40 years. During the campaign, Cunningham pledged to be an independent voice in Congress and vowed “to put Lowcountry over party.” He voted to impeach Trump in December 2019. Trump won the district in 2016 by 13 points. There are currently five Republicans who have declared their candidacy for the district. They will face off in a June 9 primary.
