The St. Andrews District 10 constituent school board is holding a reception Thursday to welcome new West Ashley High School (WAHS) Principal Ryan Cumback. The reception is scheduled to begin at 6 pm at WAHS, 4060 Wildcat Boulevard, and is open to the public. The five-member District 10 board is tasked with drawing attendance lines and adjudicating disciplinary referrals for West Ashley’s 10 public schools.

Cumback began his education career as a history teacher at WAHS and was named the school’s Rookie Teacher of the Year for 2006-2007. After receiving a Master of Secondary Educational Administration degree from The Citadel, he became the associate principal of curriculum and instruction at WAHS, serving under Principal Lee Runyon. For the past three years, he served as the principal at Moultrie Middle School in Mt. Pleasant.

WAHS is the only pubic high school in West Ashley and serves a diverse population of about 1700 students. The school offers a wide variety of programs in Career and Technical Education (CTE), fine arts, and athletics and has a Navy Junior ROTC unit. The school will be adding at career center during the 2021-2022 school year.
