Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, came to Andolini’s in West Ashley Saturday to stump for Congressional candidate Katie Arrington. Arrington hopes to become the first Republican woman to represent South Carolina in Congress. Pence called an Arrington victory “critical” in maintaining a Republican majority in the House of Representatives. There was a standing room only crowd at the event.

Pence called South Carolina “the heart of America” and cited the state’s commitment to the rights of the unborn, faith and freedom, the 2nd Amendment, and prosperity. She and the Vice President spent a lot of time in the state stumping for Representative Gresham Barrett in the 2010 Republican primary for Governor. Mike Pence was a longtime member of Congress and the Governor of Indiana before joining President Donald Trump on the 2016 ticket.

Arrington re-iterated her opposition to oil drilling off of South Carolina’s coast, which has been the main issue touted by her Democrat opponent Joe Cunningham. She listed her top issues as making the 2018 federal tax cuts permanent, securing America’s southern border and stopping illegal immigration, and ensuring that the 1st Congressional District gets the its share of federal infrastructure funding. That includes funding for flood mitigation.
