The 2018 high school football season is about to begin,  and Mt. Pleasant’s Wando High School will have a brand new,  multipurpose stadium. The facility, slated to open in August, will outshine any stadium in the Lowcountry.  The 6000  seat stadium is equipped with a state-of-the-art press box, an electronic scoreboard with a video screen, an artificial turf surface, and an 8-lane running track.  The project is emblematic of the high priority Mt. Pleasant gets in the CCSD building plan.

Since the 1% school building fund sales tax was passed by voters in 2006, nearly all of the East Cooper schools are new or rebuilt.  East Cooper was the first area to get a vocational center, known as the Center for Advanced Studies, which is located on the Wando Campus.  In the same referendum, Sullivan’s Island Elementary was to receive a $9 million renovation and instead was rebuilt for $30 million.  A North Charleston football stadium was approved by the school board at the same time as the East Cooper stadium, but ground has not even been broken for that facility.  $8.1 million was budgeted for the East Cooper stadium in the 2014 sales tax referendum, but $14.2 million has been budgeted for the project.

The East Cooper stadium will eventually be shared with Lucy Beckman High School, which will be located at the old Wando site on Mathis Ferry Road and is scheduled to open in August 2020.  The stadium will also be used for soccer, lacrosse, and band activities.
