West Ashley native plant shop Roots and Shoots expects to be moving to its new location October 1 at 1108 Wappoo Road, across the street from Ashley Oaks Plaza. It is been more than 10 years since native plant specialist Cross Seed closed its doors on St. Andrews Boulevard. Owner David Manger grows all of his plants and says that native South Carolina plants are easy to maintain, are resistant to insects and microbes and attract a wide variety of wildlife, including hummingbirds and butterflies.

Manger currently operates his nursery at his home at 7 Briarcliff Drive (near Rick Hendrick Volvo). His inventory includes native trees, such as river birches, shrubs (bottlebrush and Carolina old spice), perennial flowers (wild blue indigo and purple coneflower), vines (coral honeysuckle and Carolina Jessamine), fruits (lemon and blueberry), and honey bee boxes. See the full plant inventory here. Current operating hours are restricted to Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 4, but the schedule will be expanded at the Wappoo location. Special purchase arrangements may be made by calling 843-633-1429.

Roots and Shoots will also offer seminars on organic gardening, native plants, and attracting wildlife in your backyard. Manger sometimes does seminars at Wild Birds Unlimited on Savannah Highway.
