Charleston County transportation officials recently revealed a summary of the 388 comments received on the SC 7 and SC 171 intersection project. Based on the feedback received, the roundabout at the intersection of Orange Grove Road and Manchester Road has been ruled out in the Alternative A plan. The proposed Sumar Street extension cutting through the Masonic Center property has also been ruled out (opposed by 70% of respondents), as well as the Alternative B and C plans.

Modifications to Alternative plans A and D are still under consideration. Among the modifications to those plans being evaluated are adding turn lanes on both sides of the Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Orange Grove Road intersection, adding a bicycle and pedestrian path connecting Orange Grove and Sumar, adding a traffic light at the intersection of Sam Rittenberg and Amberly Road (near the GDC store), and adding a traffic light on Old Towne Road to eliminate the merge. The revised plans will be revealed to the public in early May.

An analysis of responses to the intersection project reveal that a plurality of respondents (23%) wanted intersection improvements not included in the four plans presented. Another 20% wanted no changes to the current intersection. The leading concerns for the intersection were improved traffic flow and safety (27%). Only 14% listed bicycle and pedestrian options as their top priority.
