The Rivers Avenue location is the fourth for the Goldberg family.  Felix and Bluma Goldberg arrived in Columbia, South Carolina in 1949.  Born in Poland, they met in 1946 in an American Displaced Persons Camp.   Bluma had been in labor camps throughout World War II and was liberated by the Americans from the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp.  Felix was also in several concentration camps throughout the war and was liberated from Auschwitz .  They had a son, Henry, in 1948.  A Jewish organization placed the family in Columbia.  Felix had been apprenticed to a printer prior to the war, but since he didn’t speak English, this career was no longer an option.  He took a job as a janitor for a tile company.  He learned on the job and eventually became a tile contractor.

Felix and Buma opened a tile store in Columbia in 1957.  It is now run by Karl and Esther Goldberg.  Henry and his wife, Gloria, founded a new company, Palmetto Tile Distributors, on February 15, 1982 at 316 Huger Street in Columbia.  Then Henry decided to expand into Charleston and opened another store in the early 90s on Johns Island. It is located at  3714-P Betsy Kerrison Parkway in the Island Shopping Center.  This location serves Kiawah and Seabrook Islands and is currently expanding from 1000 – 3000 square feet.

Wanting a more central location to the greater Charleston area, another Palmetto Tile Distributors was opened at 4639 Rivers Avenue in 2009.  The Rivers Avenue showroom is run by Henry and Gloria’s son, Jason.  With Charleston’s booming growth, Palmetto Tile Distributors serve residential customers but also have a large commercial business supplying tiles for restaurants, apartments, office buildings, and hotels.  This successful family is a true example of the American Dream.
