A Savannah-based Parker’s gas station is coming to the former Exxon property at the corner of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Orange Grove Road in West Ashley. It will be the first Parker’s franchise in the Charleston area, but Parker’s is much more than a gas station. While offering the tradition convenience store fare, it also has Parker’s Kitchen, which offers fresh-cooked Southern cuisine.

I decided to try the Parker’s Kitchen food for myself. I drove to the store near the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station Saturday morning for breakfast. I ordered an egg and sausage casserole dish, cheese grits, tangy sausage and premium coffee. It was restaurant-quality food. There was indoor seating for up to 16 diners. It was a clean store and restroom with friendly customer service. It had ample parking and beautiful landscaping. Most of the customers came in to buy food and beverages after filling up their vehicles.

The proposed West Ashley store will feature significant landscaping, including vines growing along the boundaries of the fuel canopy. Trees and shrubs will be planted on the Sam Rittenberg and Orange Grove sides of the property. It will also include 16 indoor seats for diners. A brick privacy fence is planned for the back end of the store along its property line with Northbridge Baptist Church.

Parker’s will go through two steps in the permitting process next week. On Monday, it will present its plans to the City of Charleston Design Review Board, and it will go before the Board of Zoning Appeals Wednesday. Both meetings begin at 5 pm at the Gaillard Center office complex. The Monday hearing is at the end of an 8-item agenda, which includes a proposed senior living facility on Bees Ferry Road and a storage facility next to West Ashley Walmart. The West Ashley Parker’s will be the first of 15 planned for the Charleston area.
