Richard Davis, managing partner of Charleston-based Trademark Properties, which acquired the interior spaces at Citadel Mall in February, intends to build an event center to accommodate sports tournaments and dance and cheerleading competitions on an elevated deck overlooking the Ashley and Stono rivers. The conceptual plan would be able to hold up to 12 basketball courts or 24 volleyball courts or serve as a concert venue for up to 12,000 attendees.

Davis has coached AAU basketball for decades. His teams usually have to travel a minimum of hundreds of miles to the nearest tournament venue. He said that most tournament sites don’t have restaurants, entertainment or shopping located nearby. The Charleston Sports Council told Davis that it had to turn down more than 100 event requests because of insufficient facilities.

The planned event center would be located between the Belk and Dillards anchor stores. It would require permitting and approval by Charleston City Council. It would give South Carolina and neighboring state traveling teams a state-of-the-art competition venue with access to restaurants, retail stores, coffee shops and a movie theater to visit between games or competitions. A similar event center venue is the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta.

Another upgrade Davis envisions for Citadel Mall is turning the mall concourses into meeting areas with comfortable seating and high speed WiFi to attract Millennials and independent contractors. He views the mall improvements as an opportunity to create more West Ashley jobs. The Citadel Mall currently employs more than 900 people.
