The West Ashley Revitalization Commission (WARC) will hold its June meeting Wednesday at 5:30 at the Town & Country Inn, 2008 Savannah Highway. The meeting will follow-up on May’s breakout group sessions, which worked on developing priorities in the areas of drainage and economic development. There will also be presentations about the recently-completed West Ashley bicycle trail workshop, the scheduled June 20 meeting on Savannah Highway intersection improvements and an announcement about a community input session on the former Northbridge Piggly Wiggly property.

In May, the drainage discussion group, consisting of WARC commission members, city and county public works staff and concerned citizens, recommended having neighborhood associations conduct drainage assessments and reporting the results to staff. Among the West Ashley Master Plan objectives for drainage include increasing the budget for inspection, operation and maintenance of drainage infrastructure and developing a drainage maintenance schedule. The maintenance schedule would involve the City of Charleston, Charleston County and the SCDOT.

The economic development group focused on ways to bring more jobs to West Ashley. Research included in the West Ashley Master Plan noted that 84% of West Ashley commuters work outside of West Ashley. Among the plans discussed were developing a pitch on advantages West Ashley has over surrounding communities, forming a West Ashley branding committee and and providing incentives to employers for moving to West Ashley or expanding employment there. The master plan has an objective to improve street-scaping to make shopping centers more attractive to retailers and customers. Beautification was a big part on making the South Windermere Shopping Center successful.
