Charleston City Councilman Peter Shahid is guiding the planning for the year-long 350th anniversary celebration, which will begin in April 2020. The steering committee tasked with event planning meets Wednesday, September 26 at 8 am at Charles Towne Landing, where South Carolina was founded in 1670. The meeting is open to the public.

Shahid described the planning process for the celebration at his monthly Coffee and Conversation with Peter meeting on Saturday. The celebration will focus on Charleston’s entire history and feature plays, musical performances, dance, art and other cultural presentations. Charles Towne Landing, a state park, opened in 1970 to mark the 300th anniversary of Charleston’s founding. Shahid said that there is a need for a lot of citizen involvement in the planning process.
