The Teacher Love Project, founded by former Charleston County School District (CCSD) administrator Kathy Lewis, has sponsored 260 teachers at four West Ashley schools. Lewis says that teacher wellness is the single strongest indicator of student success. The faith-based initiative is seeking business leaders, church communities, and individuals to serve as Teacher Champions to assist classroom teachers.

A lot of CCSD teachers have no family in the Charleston area. Teacher Champions ensure that teachers have a relationship with someone outside of their school environment. They perform a multitude of services, including hosting teachers for meals, taking them on outings, corresponding with them by e-mail, phone calls, buying school supplies, and praying for the teachers and their students. A Teacher Champion I spoke to at West Ashley High School was about to deliver food to a teacher at home with the flu. Teachers opt-in to partner with their mentor.

Teacher Love Project has church partnerships with Seacoast, St. Joseph’s, and Grace United Methodist in West Ashley and Sauldam Baptist in Ravenel. Teachers are being served at West Ashley High School, C.E. Williams and West Ashley middle schools, and Drayton Hall Elementary. People may make donations or sign up as Teacher Champions at TeacherLoveProject.com.
