Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg cut the ribbon at the grand opening for the West Ashley Piggly Wiggly Wednesday. The grocery store replaced the former Bi-Lo store at Quadrangle Shopping Center, 630 Skylark Drive. The ceremonial ribbon was decorated to look like a slice of bacon. Mascot Mr. Pig was on hand, getting pictures taken with customers.

Tecklenburg noted that his first job was at a Piggly Wiggly on Edisto Beach. He commended owners David and Haylee Smith for bringing the franchise back to Charleston after a five-year absence. The Smiths have operated a Piggly Wiggly store in Hollywood for two years.

Smith told customers that the store will have a personal touch and that he and his staff will always have their concerns considered. The store has a large deli, featuring Southern favorites like fried chicken, deviled eggs and red beans and rice. The store will be open daily from 6 am to 11 pm, closing only for Christmas. People registering for customer cards today and Saturday will be entered for door prizes, including a 55-inch television.

Welcome back there was a real void without the pig. Hope a pig will reopen on James Island.
