Tecklenburg takes credit for protecting hundreds of acres

In a campaign mail piece that went out last week and on his campaign website[1], Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg claims to have “protected hundreds of acres from development” in the vicinity of Shadowmoss Plantation in West Ashley. In fact, the only land in the area which has been protected are the four acres surrounding the former Bridge Pointe Condominiums as part of a FEMA buyout. The City of Charleston has no plan in place to convert those acres to water storage area to protect the flood-prone Church Creek drainage basin.

Some other questionable claims on the campaign documents include taking credit for retail investments on Savannah Highway and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and new jobs at Citadel Mall. Trademarks Properties of Charleston purchased the mall in early 2017 and acquired the former Sears and JC Penny spaces. Sears is now an HBO production studio, and MUSC will open its MUSC West Campus[2] with 900. employees January 1.

The next Mayoral Forum will be broadcast live on ABC News 4 Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm. The election is Tuesday, November 5.
