Thursday, January 31 marks the last date when residents may submit their preferences for the best design for the intersection of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Old Towne Road in West Ashley. While Charleston County transportation officials offered four designs, designated Alternatives A, B, C and D, residents may provide a “none of the above” response and suggest a better plan. You can complete the on-line feedback form here.

The intersection designs were requested by the City of Charleston as a way to eliminate the so-called “suicide merge” at Sam Rittenberg and Old Towne. A simple solution not offered in the four Charleston County plans submitted is timing a traffic light at Old Towne and Southgate (where T-Bonz is located) to prevent the merge. It would serve the same purpose as the timed lights at Old Towne and St. Andrews Boulevard on either side of the Rite Aid which prevent a merge.

Orange Grove Road has long been a cut-through road for residents heading from the Bees Ferry Road corridor to the Navy Base and I-26. Another alternative which would improve traffic flow in the area is preventing a left turn from Ashley Hall Road onto Orange Grove and adding a left turn lane at Ashley Hall and Sam Rittenberg.
