About 60 supporters of President Donald Trump stood in front of Representative Joe Cunningham’s Mt. Pleasant office Tuesday as part of a national Stop the Madness[1] rally, aimed at vulnerable Congressional Districts held be Democrats. The rallies are in response to House Democrats seeking to impeach President Trump. Cunningham[2] became the first Democrat in 40 years to win South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in 2018. Trump won the district by 13 points in 2016.

South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Drew McKissick addressed the crowd as cars and trucks drove by on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and honked their horns. Referencing Cunningham’s 2018 slogan “Lowcountry Over Party,” McKissick said, “He’s teammates with (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi now. Democrats are trying to overturn the results of the 2016 election.” The Trump supporters chanted “USA”, “Trump”, and “Four More Years.” There were about six Cunningham supporters who stood quietly off to the side.

South Carolina Republicans choose their nominees in a June 2020 primary election. Two announced candidates for Cunningham’s seat, Mt. Pleasant Town Councilwoman Kathy Landing and Bikers For Trump founder Chris Cox, attended the rally. Other announced candidates are State Representative Nancy Mace and Beaufort County Councilman Mike Covert.
