Washington aims to roll back parking meter fees, enforcement

Charleston Mayoral candidate Maurice Washington recently released a video calling for rolling back parking fees and enforcement in the 1700 meters in downtown Charleston. The fees were doubled in 2018 and meter enforcement was extended from 6 pm to 10 pm. Citations for parking meter violations cost the owners $14 tickets.

Washington says that the extended parking meter enforcement hours is hurting downtown restaurants. People who were once inclined to dine at downtown establishments are opting to dine in James Island and West Ashley, where parking is free. The maximum time that can be put on the meters under current regulations is one hour, which often puts customers in violation before they have finished their meals.

Washington faces incumbent Mayor John Tecklenburg and four other challengers in the November 5 election.
