Dr. Todd Schlesinger, a West Ashley Dermatologist, is doing free melanoma screenings today to mark Melanoma Monday, a national event to increase skin cancer awareness. The screenings are by appointment only at the Dermatology and Laser Center of Charleston on Henry Tecklenburg Blvd. (call 843-556-8886, ext. 1101 for an appointment).

Melanoma is caused by heavy exposure to ultraviolet radiation. It is the most lethal type of skin cancer. People who work outdoors or those who spend a lot of time boating or at the beach are at the highest risk. The Charleston area typically has a high UV index, meaning high exposure to cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation.

Some trademarks of melanoma moles are asymmetrical shape, a bumpy border, multiple colors, large diameter and a raised surface. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 150,000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year and 10,000 people die from the cancer annually.

Orange Theory Fitness at 975 Savannah Hwy is hosting a Miles for Melanoma fundraiser for the Melanoma Research Foundation Tues., May 9. Donors of $5 or more receive a t-shirt and gift bag. Find the schedule here: http://dermandlaser.com/blog/dermatology-laser-center-charleston-miles-melanoma-event/
